Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for Boston (4:05 for my age/gender) - or, perhaps, to use my desire for a BQ as a way to get in the hated speed work so I don't just get slower and slower over the years.  This goal is "under (re)construction" right now, until I figure out whether it is truly what I want. :)

Long-Term Running Goals:

To continue learning about myself and about running, and to enjoy being a fit, happy runner for life.   To always know why I am running and the best way to get the most (both mentally and physically) out of my runs.  To keep a sense of humor and remain optimistic about myself as a runner.  To enjoy running more and more with every passing year.

Personal:

Baby boomer generation.  Jogged a little in my 20's and 30's.  Started running seriously in 2002.  Low-carb runner since January 2010.

I love long runs and cold, cloudy weather.  I don't believe in "junk miles."  I am an optimist.  I adore dark chocolate, fog, my family, and knitting -- not necessarily in that order.

"As every runner knows, running is about more than just putting one foot in front of the other; it is about our lifestyle and who we are."  -- Joan Benoit Samuelson

Low 40s to mid 40s, mostly rainy with some breaks.  Endurance run w/ MP: 5 x (alternating 1 mile @9:00-9:15,  1 mile easy) + Leg Builder Hill.  MP miles: 9:03, 8:50 (part down L.B. hill), 9:02, 9:00.

We learned Thursday night that a very close friend of ours had died Wednesday.  Grief does not necessarily preclude running, but I didn't feel like being with people and skipped my club run today.  This friend was the most influential person in my whole life, other than my own family.  And mourning someone seems to dredge up all the grief from past losses, you know what I mean? My parents, a favorite aunt, our little nephew, even the cats I've lost, all seem to come to mind and make the new loss harder. It's a balancing act to let yourself grieve but not fall to pieces.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Running on your own sounds like the appropriate thing to do.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, and you're right about it bringing up memories of previous losses. I thinking running solo today was a good idea - a lot of long miles to let you reflect upon your friend's life, and probably your life as well. Take care - Adele

Sad news. Sorry Sno.

I am so sorry to hear about the death of your friend. I do hear what you are saying about it just bringing it all back, now matter what or who. I think a solitary run is good for the soul, so i hope it helped you find some peace and comfort!

Relationships are where it's at in this life and in the hereafter(that's what I strongly believe anyway). Nothing better than a good friend except maybe a best friend! Take care and let me know if there is anything I can do to help...you might enjoy a movie called "The other side of heaven"...

I hate when that happens! Even if it isn't a death just something bad happens and you think of everything that ever happened badly in life!

I"m sorry to hear that your friend passed. You and Tracy amaze me with the amount of miles you can put in when you are sad. I would probably be balled up on the couch with the covers over my face. sending hugs to you and yours :)

Hi Sno, big hugs to you. I do know exactly what you mean about dredging up past losses. This happens to me a lot too. I am glad you are so 'grounded' and able to make sure you do what you need for yourself (alone time) ... again, big hugs.

From Dale on Sun, Apr 25, 2010 at 20:12:21 from 64.206.238.35

So sorry for your loss. It helps me to remember specific good times to help deal in situations like that. But I know exactly what you mean about needing some alone time while running.

Sno I'm so sorry for your loss and understand the dredging up of past losses. Remember to take care of yourself, these kind of stresses seem to zap my energy. You will be in my thoughts.

From Tracy on Sat, May 01, 2010 at 22:46:51 from 173.23.75.96

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I will be thinking of you and your friend's family. I do feel that every time you grieve you are grieving for all the people you love who are no longer with you...
